Government wants cheap 2mb broadband

The government is trying to be as proactive with its plans to provide high speed broadband and wireless mobile broadband to the whole of the UK by 2012, but its saying that will greatly depend on pricing from its providers.

According to a survey and report done the by ispreview.co.uk, 48.3% of those interviewed said that the affordability of the service will be the most important factor they consider concerning the ‘universal service commitment’. The speed of the connection came after.

Not so surprised that was those that followed, 25% were concerned over the data allowances, 16% latency performance 10% for upload speeds.

The survey did have a surprise though, the report indicated that a huge percentage of people, 84%, felt that the UK government’s target of 2mb mass landline and mobile or pay as you go mobile broadband services on a nationwide coverage was too low.

Fibre-optic connections are currently considered the best method of by extending the best 2Mb broadband and best mobile broadband services to rural areas.


“It’s clear from the results that consumers do not wish to be short-changed by expensive, unreliable (fluctuating speeds) or inflexible ‘quick-fix’ solutions, especially with remote and rural residents often existing on lower incomes,” the website said.
