In an excellent piece of good news for those who support going greens for cars and vans, the Obama administration announced today that $2.4 billion in federal grants would be awarded to Ford,General Motors, and Chrysler, in order to support the development of hybrid and electric vehicles for use in private sales, corporate, industry, car hire, and van rental agencies.
Part of the grant also includes a $1.5 billion program specifically for making longer lasting and more powerful batteries and $500 million for the development of electric motors and drive components. It will hopefully make some battery projects possible and can speed the development and research of electric engine technology.
“To get more battery power and electric cars takes quite a bit of investment in products that are not guaranteed success,” Brinley said. The U.S. automakers would “take a lot longer to complete” projects without the aid, she said.
