Major earthquake hits Haiti

A major earthquake, measuring 7.0 on the richter scale, struck the impoverished nation of Haiti on Tuesday 12 January.

The quake is the most powerful to hit the Caribbean country in 200 years and is a devastating blow for Haitians who were already struggling to survive. The Haiti earthquake has toppled houses, burying hundreds, maybe even thousands of people beneath the rubble.
