Making Your Garden More Manageable

Gardens are like puppies and toddlers – they seem to need your constant attention. But you know what, unlike the case with puppies and toddlers, this is just an illusion! It is perfectly possible to have a lovely garden without spending all of our spare time down on your knees covered in soil, as you will see below.

1. Stones and Paving: The Lazy Gardener’s Dream

Let’s start with the ultimate in low-maintenance gardening: stone supplies and paving. Incorporating these into your garden not only gives it a sophisticated look but also drastically cuts down on the amount of green space you need to manage. So you can say goodbye to endless mowing and hello to stylish stone pathways or a chic patio once and for all.

2. Perennials: Plant Once, Enjoy Forever (Almost)

Perennials are the plant world’s gift that keeps on giving. Plant them once, and they’ll come back year after year, like that one friend who never gets the hint to leave, but this time you will always be happy to see them! They’re perfect for adding colour and life to your garden without the annual replanting drama, so you can enjoy the beauty of nature without the burden of gardening.

3. Mulch: Your Garden’s Best Friend

If you haven’t discovered mulch yet, where have you been? It keeps weeds at bay (because who has time for weeding?), retains moisture, and adds nutrients to the soil. It’s basically a garden spa treatment that will ensure that your plants and flowers are always in the best possible health, which, of course, means much less work for you.

4. Go for Shrubs and Bushes

Shrubs and bushes are low-effort, but they also offer a high impact in the garden. They require minimal pruning and can add structure and character to your garden, while also helping to shield you from the prying eyes of those nosey neighbours who want to know your every move. Plus, they’re great for attracting wildlife, so you can enjoy your very own David Attenborough experience from the comfort of your window.

5. Install an Irrigation System

Dragging a hose around or remembering to water the plants every day is a chore that you can probably do without, especially in those hot and dry summer months. The good news is, a good irrigation system can take the hassle out of watering once and for all. Simply set it on a timer, and voilà, your garden gets its thirst quenched on schedule, leaving you free to enjoy a cuppa.

6. Container Gardening: For the Commitment-Phobes

Not ready to commit to a full garden? Try container gardening. Pots are great for growing a variety of plants, and the best part is, you can move them around so you will never get bored, and more importantly, you can beat out the weather, by moving them to the optimum place each season. It’s like rearranging furniture, but for your garden.

7. Choose Low-Maintenance Plants

Some plants are high-maintenance divas; others are more laid-back. That is why, if you’re a lazy gardener, it pays to do a bit of research and choose plants that don’t need constant pampering. Lavender, geraniums, and sedum are all great choices for a fuss-free garden.

8. Artificial Grass: Fake It ‘Til You Make It

If you’re really not into lawn maintenance, consider artificial grass. It’s come a long way from the neon-green astroturf of yesteryear. It looks surprisingly real and means you can retire your lawnmower for good.

As you can see, it’s totally possible to make your garden much more manageable without sacrificing its charm and usability one jot. With a bit of planning and some clever choices, you can create a beautiful outdoor space that doesn’t eat up all your free time, so you get to spend more time smelling the roses and feeling the sun on your face.
