Should You Build a House From Scratch?

Have you ever thought about building a home from scratch? Most of us have, even if it’s just as a vague daydream while we’re doing the grocery shopping. And it’s no wonder – the idea of it can be incredibly exciting! Imagine your perfect home, built entirely to your own specifications and sense of style, a home that won’t need years of ‘work’ and renovation once you move in because it’s all already been done. For most people, this dream remains just that – a dream. But should it?

Having your own home built from scratch may not be as impossible as you think. With the right finances, good planning, and a couple of compromises, it can be accomplished! Yet just like any other choice you make regarding your family, home, and lifestyle, there are definitely pros and cons to the process that you’ll want to consider before embarking on this journey. Make sure you consider all the possibilities and plan for every eventuality before you commit, and you stand the best chance of building your own perfect home.

The Cons

We’ll start with the cons – the drawbacks to building your own home from scratch. Firstly, and perhaps most obviously, it is expensive! There’s no getting around it, building a home from scratch comes at a significantly great cost than buying a pre-owned house. This is because you need to buy the land itself, as well as the materials used to build the home, and the expertise of those you employ to construct it. The upshot of this is that your budget won’t stretch as far – so you’ll need to make a choice about what is most important to you. If you value size, chances are you’ll be able to afford a much bigger property through a simple purchase. However, if you’re more concerned about specificity and personalisation, then building from scratch could be for you. Finally, it’s important to note that this process can take a long time. Are you willing to wait for the perfect home, or would you rather move into somewhere immediately, even if it isn’t exactly what you want?

The Pros

On the other hand, if you’re willing to wait and able to handle your budget effectively, building a house from scratch can be the most rewarding way to forge your family’s future. The first reason for this is choice. You can have a say in every aspect of your new home, from what structural materials you buy from the timber merchants, to how your home is architecturally designed, to the fittings of your bathroom and kitchen. This level of unique design can only be achieved if you decide to build from scratch, and it is not to be underestimated. Alongside this power of choice comes the ability to tailor your home to your own personal needs. This could mean installing a home gym, or a special media room, or simply ensuring your children each have their own space to call theirs. And finally, you can feel like your hard-earned funds are going directly into your family’s life, rather than lining the pockets of an estate agent.
