Turn Your Garden Into a More Functional Space with These Ideas

November 27, 2021 by Penny Leave a Comment

If it’s been a long time since you used your garden as a functional leisure space, it might be time to do something about that. Maybe it’s messy and overgrown or it simply doesn’t offer you any of the things you need in order to want to spend time out there. With that in mind, we’re going to talk today about some of the ways in which you can start to turn your garden into a more functional space.

Plan Movement Around the Garden

One of the things you’ll need to consider when creating the ideal garden for your home is movement. How are you going to navigate the space and move around it? It’s something you should definitely plan ahead for because you want to make the most of all the space at your disposal. You could even break down the garden into different zones with different functions.

Make Your Furniture Work for You

The furniture you choose for your space needs to be tailored to your specific needs and priorities. It’s up to you to make your furniture really work for you, whether it’s loungers by the pool or a sofa area for relaxing with friends. There’s garden furniture for just about every need. Do some research and make sure you’re choosing furniture that’s going work for you.

Consider Outdoor Buildings

Something as simple as a standard outdoor shed or storage unit can help you make the most of your garden. These structures can provide opportunities for both play and storage and can even help with the beginning stages of any outdoor growing projects. Equally, you could introduce a garden workshop that effectively serves as an extension of your property, housing anything from your office space to a library or a craft room. These additions can significantly enhance garden functionality and are sure to see you using your outdoor space far more often whatever the weather.

Build a Raised Patio

It might be a good idea to consider a raised patio area in your garden. These are perfect for when you want to create a space that’s all about alfresco dining and socialising with friends. The patio area can be distinct from the green areas of the garden, even overlooking them if you opt for a high raise. Building a patio isn’t actually that difficult and it doesn’t need to be, but if you don’t have many DIY skills, you can hire someone to do the work for you.

Create Some Extra Shade

It makes sense to think about adding some extra shade to your outdoor space if that’s something that’s currently lacking and you live in a very warm area. It’s understandable that you don’t spend much time out there if you’re always in direct sunlight. Some new trees, outdoor umbrellas or an overhead structure of some kind might offer the shade you need.

Grow Plants Vertically

Adding different features and dimensions to the garden can really give it life and make it more visually interesting. One way of doing that is to grow plants vertically. You can install a pergola for example and grow some climbing plants up it. It looks great and incorporates a unique type of plant life into the garden’s overall aesthetic as well.

As you can see, there are plenty of options to consider when it comes to turning your garden into a new functional space that you and your whole family can enjoy. Once you’ve made the kinds of changes mentioned above, you might also start hosting parties with friends in your garden during summer.
