Going through pregnancy can feel like a stressful time, regardless of what is going on in your life. However, when there are extra issues, and you have no control over them, it can threaten to take the shine off those steps towards motherhood. When you are expecting the arrival of your first baby, it’s naturally exciting, but if you are looking at your current home, and you think that you need to go somewhere a bit more nurturing, there are a few things to consider if you plan on selling your home.
Giving Yourself Enough Time
Selling a home is not just about putting it on the market and getting it off your hands. The average timescale for selling a home is approximately three months. However, there are things that can make this even longer. There could be issues that crop up on the survey, and the person making an offer may not get accepted for the mortgage right away. In addition, you also have to consider if the house is truly up to code. Many people get onto the property ladder by purchasing a cheap house and doing it up. Now might not be the time to undertake massive kitchen renovations, but if you are struggling to sell your home, or you may have tried to sell it in the past but there were no takers, is it because the place could do with a lick of paint? The timescale is crucial, but you also need to make sure the property is up to code. If you allow yourself plenty of time, this will give you the opportunity to settle into the new place before the baby comes along.
Keeping Stress in Perspective
It is so important to make sure you’re not overdoing it. There will be times when you are feeling overwhelmed, and for anybody trying to sell a house, it can be stressful. The fact is that when you’re pregnant, you’ve got to prioritise yourself. You might think that you have to be there every step of the way, but if you need to step away from the process and leave it up to your partner to sort the home viewings and deal with the estate agent, do it! In addition, when the nesting instinct kicks in, you might feel incredibly frustrated by all this, but you can channel it by decluttering the home ready for packing later on.
Sorting the Baby Stuff
When a baby is on its way, the temptation is to buy as much stuff as possible in order to feel like you are providing for this newborn. But moving home and selling up will throw more than its fair share of curveballs. Because your current home is a “show home” looking for an ideal buyer, you’ve got to make sure that all the baby stuff is stored away for the moment. Or if you are looking to get set up in a new place, you may want to ask help from your parents or friends nearby just to make sure you’ve got somewhere to go.
It’s not easy when you are selling up, because you’ve got to make sure you have got somewhere else to go, while also making sure that you are prepared for the birth. But breathe and take it easy!
